It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kenneth James Hanula, Jr., affectionately known as “Mr. Kenny,” on December 20, 2025, at the age of 67.
Born on April 17, 1958, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Ardith P. and Kenneth J. Hanula, Sr., Kenny moved with his family to Waynesboro, VA in 1960 and proudly called it home for the rest of his life. Though his career kept him on the road for many years, he always cherished returning to the town and people he loved.
Kenny loved antiquing and running Apple Acres Antiques, forming connections through local shops and his eBay business. Earlier in his career, he traveled coast to coast hauling high-value and unique cargo, such as computer equipment, the King Tut exhibit, touring equipment for Crosby, Stills & Nash, and nothing but one pair of drapes from New York City to Dallas. While he treasured these adventures, what mattered most to him was his family and the friendships he formed throughout his life.
After retiring from long-haul trucking, Kenny found great joy serving the community as a school bus driver, becoming “Mr. Kenny” to students at William Perry Elementary School, Kate Collins Middle School, and Waynesboro High School. The children, staff, and fellow drivers became like family.
Kenny was preceded in death by his mother, Ardith Patricia Weiss Hanula.
He is survived by his father, Kenneth J. Hanula, Sr.; his sisters Janice Archer and Patti Abbott (Mike); his nieces and nephews Catherine (Travis), David (Kate), Christine (McLean), and Kevin; and his great-niece Scarlett.
“Mr. Kenny” will be remembered for his kind heart and sweet smile. In his honor, the family encourages simple acts of kindness—whether through a smile, a helping hand, or a thoughtful gesture. For those who wish to make a memorial contribution, you may consider supporting the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at any of the Waynesboro Public Schools.
Private interment was held at Augusta Memorial Park.
A Celebration of Life honoring Kenny will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026, at the Waynesboro Moose Lodge, located at 481 Hopeman Parkway, Waynesboro, Virginia.
Visitation will take place from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., offering time to greet Kenny’s family and connect with all who knew and loved him. A brief service will follow from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m., featuring stories, memories, and reflections. A reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. where light refreshments will be served.
Friends and family are welcome to join at any time; casual dress is encouraged.
